I feel honored O__O
Honestly I’m not all that great as a graphic designer. I’d say it’s actually an entirely different side of thinking compared to illustration/fine art. I know you’ll get more help for sure as you get into a college with good graphic design program, (just do some research!), but I can tell you what I’ve been told: always keep a fresh mind and look at things from many different sides. always update your portfolio. Try designing and/or redesigning existing ads/product packaging/webpage/etc to make them better… (graphic design is a really big umbrella)
I know some people as freelance graphic designers, they just need to get their names out. Marketing themselves well and let clients come to them. If you want to work under a company (more secure, stable and more benefits), you need to constantly send out the most creative portfolios to catch company’s attention. Be somewhat aggressive to show you are truly aiming for the job.
But a creative mind is the most important as graphic designer, so I think you can begin training yourself for that. If you already got one, keep using it so it won’t get lazy. ^__^
(oops, ended up writing big long paragraphs…sorry! Orz)
